During 2009 to date we have continued our programme of co-fuelling Edenderry Power Plant with over 11,000 tonnes of carbon neutral Biomass processed during the five months ended May. In the process, this supply of biomass has abated CO2 emissions to the atmosphere by c. 10,000 tonnes as well as providing an outlet for the supply of locally produced biomass material. The main biomass types used have been woodchip, sawdust, willow chips as well as a quantity of oversize material from the Bord na Mona composting plant at Kilberry.
This quantity is in addition to over 20,000 energy tonnes biomass processed in the 2009 calendar year and is part of our ongoing plan to co-fuel with over 100,000 tonnes biomass annually by 2013. It contributes to the government's 40% Renewable Energy target for 2020 and unlike wind generation is fully despatchable. It also supports the governments White Paper target of co-fuelling the peat fired power plants with up to 30% renewable biomass by 2015.
